Working Among the Animals: “No two days are the same here”
Our colleague Marga Bakker works every day to help create a clean and pleasant environment at a special place: Blijdorp Zoo. As a foreworker, she works among the animals and visitors. She does her job with great joy and pride. In an interview with Facto, she explains what makes her work so special.
“When I start work in the morning, I hear the animals right away. That’s what makes my job special,” says Marga. “Here, you walk past flamingos, monkeys, and sometimes even a lion. It’s still fun every day.”
Working Together to Create a Great Place
Marga works with her team to keep the zoo clean and tidy. That’s important because there are many visitors every day.
“We make sure everything looks good—from the trails to the restrooms. Visitors may not always notice it consciously, but they can feel it. A clean environment makes their day more enjoyable.”

“You’re never on your own. We help each other out and make time for a chat. That’s what makes the work enjoyable.”

What does Marga like best? The variety.
“No two days are the same. One day you’re working indoors, the next you’re working outdoors. And there’s always something going on. That’s what keeps the job fun and active.”
